Duane Buck, the owner of Acanthus, has had a passion for framing his entire life. Through years of training, education and testing Duane was awarded MASTER CERTIFIED PICTURE FRAMER status by the Professional Picture Framing Association. This is the highest designation, with fewer than 50 framers holding this honor worldwide. Acanthus was originaly named The Frame Shop & Gallery when Duane acquired the shop in 1994. In 2005 Duane moved the shop to a larger location in San Ramon and at the same time changed the name of the shop to Acanthus. As of 2008, Acanthus includes a new location in Walnut Creek, and a commercial workshop utilized for large orders, restoration work, and creating his own line of frames.
Our mission at ACANTHUS is to create an experience that is unsurpassed in the picture framing world. We create excitement through the use of stunningly beautiful products and state of the art design, showcased in a setting that enhances and highlights the superb craftsmanship of skilled artisans. We design and produce unique products that are rarely seen, but can be immediately appreciated through their sheer excellence. We subscribe to the Aristotelian philosophy that states: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” We take this to mean that through daily diligence, and passion about our craft, we can achieve excellence in our products and services that is not just repeatable, but thoroughly expected.
In an age of mass produced objects, and outsourced labor, we want to renew in people the sense that they can find and acquire truly fine handmade things of beauty, made by people who care about their work.
We believe that part of being successful in business is giving back to the community which supports us. We do this through donations and involvement in school art programs, charity auctions, and community events that support the arts. Through our efforts we hope to increase awareness, interest, and appreciation of the arts, especially in school age students, so that fine art will not only survive, but will be revitalized.
